What is the TN visa for Canadians and Mexicans?
The TN visa is a nonimmigrant work status created under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA, formerly NAFTA) for Canadian and Mexican citizens in specific professional occupations. There are over 60 qualifying professions including accountants, engineers, lawyers, scientists, computer systems analysts, and nurses.
Canadian citizens can apply for TN status directly at a US port of entry by presenting a job offer letter, professional credentials, and the appropriate fee. Approval is granted on the spot by a CBP officer; no advance petition is needed. Mexican citizens must first obtain a TN visa stamp at a US consulate before traveling.
TN status is granted for up to three years initially and can be renewed indefinitely in three-year increments. There is no cap or lottery. However, TN is explicitly a nonimmigrant status, and applicants who show clear immigrant intent may be denied. Spouses and dependent children receive TD status but are not work-authorized.
