Can I work in the US on a tourist visa?
No. A B-1 business visitor or B-2 tourist visa does not authorize employment in the United States. Working while on a tourist visa violates the terms of your admission and is a serious immigration violation. This includes remote work performed in the US for a foreign employer, which many people incorrectly assume is permissible.
Working without authorization while in B status creates a record of immigration violation that can result in visa revocation, denial of future visa applications, and bars to re-entry. CBP officers can and do check electronic devices and ask detailed questions about employment activities at the border.
If you need to work in the US, you must obtain the appropriate work visa before beginning employment. The most common options are H-1B for specialty occupations, L-1 for intracompany transfers, O-1 for extraordinary ability, TN for Canadian and Mexican professionals under USMCA, and E-3 for Australian professionals.
