Can I travel outside the US while my green card is pending?
If you have a pending Form I-485 (adjustment of status application), you generally must not leave the US without first obtaining Advance Parole (Form I-131). Departing without Advance Parole is treated as abandoning your I-485 application, and you lose all the filing fees and progress on your case.
Advance Parole is a travel document that allows you to re-enter the US after traveling abroad while your adjustment of status is pending. You apply for it simultaneously with the I-485 using Form I-131. There is no additional government fee when filed concurrently with I-485. Once approved, you receive a travel document valid for a specific period.
There are exceptions: H-1B and L-1 visa holders can sometimes re-enter on their existing visa stamps rather than Advance Parole. However, traveling on an expired visa or without valid status documentation is risky. If USCIS approves your green card while you are abroad, the case may be affected. Always consult an immigration attorney before traveling with a pending adjustment case.
